AHN NEWS: July 2006

This month's AHN News is dedicated to the new and improved ARTS & HEALING CONNECTION CENTER. Tristy and I have been working over the last month to transform what was once the AHN Bulletin Board into a place of greater interconnectedness and inspiration. The Connection Center is a now place on artheals.org where you can share your stories, ask questions, and inspire and support each other. The best way to enjoy the Connection Center is to click here, and begin exploring.

This issue of AHN News will highlight some recent inspirational posts from the Connection Center. It will also outline the new Forum Headings, and offer some technical advice in Frequently Asked Questions. If you have questions or need help, please don't hesitate to contact Tristy Taylor, the Connection Center Moderator, at ahn@artheals.org.

July is the month we celebrate Independence Day here in the United States. One hope I have for the Connection Center is that it will allow everyone to connect independently and directly, by giving you the opportunity to post your stories and news yourself, at any time, from anywhere. It is by working together and sharing insights, questions, and stories that the arts & healing movement can grow and flourish. May the Connection Center be a place that supports you in your journey in the healing arts.

All best wishes,
Mary Daniel Hobson, Director, Arts and Healing Network
INSPIRATIONAL POST #1:

Artist Nina Kuriloff from New York City writes:

ÒI am a painter who is working on an ongoing series of fantasy trees. My paintings are healing for me as they are expressions of joy and at times they are cathartic, too. These paintings have given joy to those who have purchased them. I would hope that some of my artwork would be found to be healing to others.Ó

INSPIRATIONAL POST #2:

hnasc has a web site called Abundance Tools
hnasc, a webmaster from Alabama, writes:

"I was inspired again by something someone said to me long ago, at a time when I was struggling with what looked like to me to be a string of wrong roads and poor decisions in my life. I don't know if I have the numbers right but the story goes that it took Thomas Edison about ten thousand experiments before he succeeded in the technology that resulted in the light bulb. In an interview, a young reporter once asked Edison if he ever got discouraged, failing so many times. Edison replied, 'Young man, I have not failed at all. I have correctly identified 10,000 ways that will not work which puts me 10,000 ways closer to the way that will.'

In adopting Edison's perspective, I have learned that the bigger the dream, sometimes, the more ways there are to identify that will not work before we hone our path to the way that will.Ó

INSPIRATIONAL POST #3:

eileen2000, an artworker and teacher from Palo Alto, California, writes:

"My mom has schizophrenia and our relationship has gone through a lot of stages. At one point I pretty much separated from her. Then, within the last 10 years, she lost her husband and was unable to live alone and I had to become involved again.

Inviting craziness back into my life meant finding a way to deal with it that would not cause harm like it had done in the past. In the process of working on several art projects I found compassion for my mom. One of the projects is documented online here.Ó

INSPIRATIONAL POST #4:

Artist Lauren Raine from Tucson, Arizona writes:

ÒI and a few colleagues are interested in creating a network and/or forum for artists and other "cultural creatives" interested in finding, forming, joining or simply educating themselves about options for reasonable work and housing space.

The fact is, as real estate prices and developers keep absorbing artists spaces, it is increasingly becoming economical difficult for artists to survive, without finding ways of cooperating to share space and resources.

I'd be delighted to hear from any interested artists and related individuals.Ó
