Each year, in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words conducts a free international poetry and art contest for youth on the theme of watersheds. The contest is designed to help youth explore the natural and cultural history of their local watersheds, and to express, through poetry and art, what they discover. You can view the 2001 winners on the River of Words' web site. The 2002 contest deadlines are Feb. 15 (North America) and March 1 (International). ART PALS:
Bridging Generations with Art
Since 1997, Art Pals in Marin County, CA has been bringing schoolchildren and elders together through the universal language of the arts. Children as young as five years old are paired with an elder with whom they exchange art - such as portrait dolls, portrait quilts, or a favorite things quilt.
Each year the work created is exhibited at the Falkirk Cultural Center in San Rafael, CA. This year's exhibition included the Portrait Paper Doll Wall (see photo at right). They are also at work on a Quilt of Peace and Friendship. As Art Pals founders Susan Hyde, Judith Selby, and Madelon Montobio describe, "The language of art transcends spoken language, age, ethnicity, customs, and isolation." Art Pals is a refreshing reminder of the power of creativity to transcend difference and unify communities. For more information, please contact Susan Hyde at artpals@earthlink.net or call 415-383-6573.Ê
